Not the Same Old Business Culture

Robert Pankuck, Senior Vice President, Managing Director, Client Development

How long have you been at Active?

I was in the ad agency business for 20 years and worked with Active from that side, so I had an up-close view on how barter worked. Over time, I came to realize what a terrific tool it was for my clients. In 2009, I received a call from some former colleagues who’d already joined Active, so I decided to explore the opportunity.

Describe your career path.

My first job was as a traffic coordinator at Deutsch; I had dreams of being a copywriter. After getting channeled into account management, I spent 14 years at Grey Advertising, the last four running the 3M business. I left there in 2006 to run the client service department at Dentsu’s NY office, with primary responsibilities for the Canon and Toyota businesses.

What’s the one thing you really like about your job?

The limitless potential of the trading model. On the surface, corporate trade may not appear to be a very creative business, but it really is. We have a model that restores value by creating and sharing leverage with our clients in ways that help them meet their specific goals. Once we’re able to demonstrate that to our clients, they see corporate trade as more than an occasion-based tool. Watching that evolution is really fun.

Why should someone want to work at Active?

If you’re tired of the same-old business culture, Active can fix that. These are some of the most fun, agile minds I’ve worked with. There’s an entrepreneurial spirit here that pervades everything.
